The Mean Fiddler show on July 17, 2003 was the first time in 27 years since the
Classic Nektar line-up last played in England. Classic Nektar line-up last played
in England on February 29, 1976 at the New Victoria Theatre in London. Oddly enough,
this night was also Classic Nektar's last time they played in England. The final
song played that very special night was Good Day. Just below, we have the song in
its entirety from the Mean Fiddler show.
The 2003 world music scene had changed dramatically since those last Nektar tours
together in 1976. Via internet and word of mouth, faithful fans still found their
way to London from all over Britain, tho' it wasn't exactly a mob scene like daze
gone by, no lines around the block, in fact it was tough to even find our name mentioned
on the exterior of the Astoria Theater (I have pix!) due to very weak promotion.
However... here we were.. I for one, was back in my home town, but it was all different.
Familiar landmarks were still there... but not the people. The faces had changed
along with the traffic patterns… and as I'd only brought my video section of the
lightshow, I had to meet up with Jasper Johns (Fruit Salad Lights) first, to see
if a collaboration of equipment and styles could work!
We all arrived at the stage door on time, only to find that the building was locked.
Jasper was hanging out… also waiting, …(also not anticipating that I would be
even be with the band), so it was right then that he realized we needed a video
projector… so he set off back to Chiswick to get his.
Meanwhile, we gained entry to the club, surveying all the possibilities as the rented
gear was rolled onto the dance floor, hoping that we could get a sound/light check
before the doors opened to the public… which would be in about three hours!
To be continued!
