This was Nektar's first release in over 20 years which was long overdue and
snapped up very quickly. All the songs on this album are new except for Shangri-La
which dates back to the Roye Albrighton's Nektar tour 1981.
The Prodigal Son is a mixed bag of rootsy blues songs which opens with the hard rocking
'dual' tune: "Terminus / Oh My" that features Taff on keyboards
using song snippets that flashback to their "Remember The Future" album.
Since Nearfest, "Now" became a staple of Nektar's set list when
they perform in concert until 2006. This song meant a lot to Roye since his near death experience
in 2000 from having a liver transplant and its fondation is based on that experience
which he expresses in the form
a ballad.
"Salt And Vinegar And Rhythm And Blues" is a straight ahead hard rocking
song.
"The Drinking Man's Wine" is a nice soulful ballad.
Day 9 is more like a compilation / overture of all the previous songs on the album.
The album has some catchy tunes and is well worth a good listen. This was Roye's
first attempt to get the Nektar bandwagon rolling once again since his lst
incarnation of the band in 1982. Taff joins Roye on this
Nektar worthy effort and has some outstanding moments on "Terminus" as well
the other songs.
Roye has complained bitterly over the years that this album was overproduced and
the finished product was not the outcome he intended it to be. In order to rectify this situation, Roye, released through a now
defunct private Nektar club, he released another version of this album called "The Prodigal
Son Beta." The beta version is a more straight ahead hard-rocking album than the
Bellaphon release minus Taff's wizardly.
